President's Report

I am extremely honored and excited to serve as your President this year. Thank you to all of you that have taught me what I have learned over the past years about the club, its values and its purpose. I will use all of what I've learned and what I will learn to continue what work we have to do. So many of you have served in this role and I welcome all ideas and feedback as we gear up for a fun and enlightening year.

This year's theme is "Sharing Hearts Through Helping Hands". These words describe every member in this club. We are losing many extremely talented and giving members this year and although we are saddened by this, we realize that everything grows stronger with change.

Some of my goals this year include, increased membership, Habitat For Humanity, Food Charity programs, Heifer Project, KIND NEWS, donation packages for our troops overseas, exciting new fundraisers and shorter general meetings! Toss in a few really fun social gatherings and we're in for another wonderful and productive year.

Congratulations to the 2006 board members, Vice President- Mary Schroeder, Secretary- Judy Huyvaert and Treasurer- Liann Holcomb. Thank you to Jeanette Wells for a fabulous installation of officers in December.(Please join us on Wednesday, Jan. 11th when our new Vice President, Mary Schroeder will be installed.) Thanks also to Cheryl Channic for arranging and organizing the holiday party and to Ann Warren and Joanna Seebeck for adding the fun and games to the evening. Another congratulations to all of you that reached amazing milestones in your years of service to the club. It is very impressive to see so many of you have devoted valuable time and talents for so many years.

The general meetings will be set up with a few changes . When you arrive, please check in with me if you have a committee report to give. If you have no report, you will not be called on. ALL committee reports will be limited to two minutes. Your report should recap  what your committee has firmed up when you met outside of club meetings with details listed in the newsletter. (who, what, where, when and why). All feedback regarding committee reports should be directed to the committee chairperson outside of the general meeting. Board meetings will be the place for in depth discussions regarding activities. The new format ("speed meetings") may take some getting use to but after a few of them, I think we'll see a lot fewer yawns towards the end.

I look forward to our first general meeting of the new year on January 11.
May 2006 be a healthy and happy year for everyone.
Laura

Vice President's Report
Mary Schroeder
maryned2004@yahoo.com

Recently an email went out stating "dial 677 from your cell phone if you are being pulled over by anyone you think might be suspicious (not a police officer).

I sent this 677 to our chief in town and this is what he responded:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: MMARRON
Subject: RE: Fw: State Police No.
I have included the web page below from SNOPES.com. This is a web site that investigates these types of claims and stories. You will see below that they have not been able to prove or disprove the veracity of this story, although there have been many variations to the story. They do point out that *677 is the non-emergency cell number to the Ontario Provincial Police.

If advising about this type of a “pull-over” scam, please tell people to dial 911 on their cell phone if they are concerned for their safety. This will ensure that they get the help they need or verification in this case. If a person were worried about the officer pulling them over they should keep their doors locked and only open the window a crack to talk to the officer. Once verification is made by calling 911, they can proceed with following the officers directions. If you have any other questions please give me a call.

See you at the general meeting!

Mary

Immediate Past President's Report
Joyce Hundhausen
joyce@svs.com

Hi Everyone!
As this year comes to a close, I have reflected on a variety of things that I have done this year. One is being a Club Woman. I joined the Glendale Heights Juniors about 6 years ago, because of a great group of women rolling up their sleeves, pitching in, working together and accomplishing many things. Time and dedication seemed to be the words of the day. It is inspiring to someone from the outside, that didn't know much about women’s clubs and the charity work they do.
Today I reflect back on my year as president, and see some different faces, but the same diligence. We as a club have accomplished a great number of things this year: The DuPage Family Shelter, CASA, Glendale Heights Adopt A Highway, Miss DuPage Scholarship Fund, a Life Source Blood Drive, American Cancer Society, our Senior Citizen, National Night Out, Bingo Tent, the little boy Noah, the Vets and the Homeless Sandwich Project, Vendor Fair, just to name a few things. Other things that have our club’s name on them are: the things we as a club recycled, our regular scholarship fund, Glen Oaks Dinner Dance, TLC Camp, Easter Baskets for the Family Shelter, Fall Harvest Bake Sale, Cub Scout sponsor, Stars for CRF, and the Health Fair. Also, I noted, that some local newspapers have recently noted the things we have done in the past.
We are quite an accomplished group! There is always great spirit in this group. I hope that in the years to come we will gain great strength from our accomplishments and continue the good work that we do for the charities and ourselves. We need to bring in others to see and feel that great spirit of ours to continue our growth as a club and individuals within the club.

I want to thank each and every one of you for making this a great year in club. Memories abound! You know who you are and what you have done as your part. The list is too great to mention all of you here, but in synopsis: those who have generously opened their homes to have Board Meetings, Craft Nights, and Basket Nights, those who have given their time generously to be a chair of our many committees and events, and of course those who have volunteered for those committees, events and special committees and events. Thank You to all of you!
Two last comments I will always keep mind for my year as president. One is that this year we had a great accomplishment from the Miss DuPage contest: to watch a young woman gain the title of Miss Illinois and is now moving to gain the title of Miss America. The other is that we have lost one of our great members. In passing, Sue gave back to the club she held dearest via a scholarship fund, which will keep her memory alive and working with us for many years to come.
May God bless all of us and keep us strong to carry on the good work that we do.

Thank You!
Joyce Hundhausen

If you don’t already have your admission & raffle tickets, please call us so we can get them over to you! Remember we are asking that each member sell a minimum of 10 raffle tickets- this is a must because we need to sell all 400 tickets! The bowl will be held Saturday, February 25th at Wheaton Bowl. We have contracted with Glendale Catering for the food…they are well known and have great food, so we should have no food complaints this year. Tickets are $30 per person for bowling and dinner. $20 for dinner only (1 table only reserved for members first). Raffle tickets are $10 each with a grand prize of $1000 and 28 other cash prizes awarded. Only 400 tickets will be sold (ALL 400 MUST BE SOLD!)! If you or anyone you know would like to be a lane sign sponsor, cost is $25 for bowl only or $45 for bowl and Bingo sign sponsorship!

Thanks to those that contributed to this month's newsletter.   Our new Newsletter Chairman starting with the next newsletter is Judy Huyvaert. This is not new to Judy as she's created and designed countless newsletters for the club over the years. (dating as far back as "word processor" days.) This is a huge undertaking and we are very fortunate to have Judy as the chairwoman this year.

Thank you to everyone over the past years that consistently played a part in our very successful newsletters.
The GHJWC web site will continue to have all newsletters available a few days after distribution.

Congratulations to our new Executive Board- Laura, Mary S., Liann and Judy! Also, congratulations to our members who were recognized for their years of service: Cheryl Channic 21 years! Sharon Fonte 16 years! Joyce Hundhausen 6 years! Judy Huyvaert 19 years! Linda Jackson 5 years! Barb Kuminowski 12 years! Virginia Proffitt 13 years! Joanna Seebeck 12 years! Jeanette Wells 11 years! Peggy Wells 14 years! We were sort of playing “catch-up” for recognition being missed on the 5-10-15-20 schedule, we will pick up the ball again now, so stay tuned for more recognition awards next year! On a sad note, our good friend and long time member, Barb K. will be moving this summer- we will miss her dearly! We are excited for you, though, Barb and wish you and Marty the best of luck!
Reminder: Annual membership dues ($30) will be collected at the January general meeting.
Please pay directly to either Judy or Jeanette.

Fall Fundraiser Meeting Results

The Fall Fundraiser meeting on January 4th was very well attended. The votes are in and there will be a Fall Auction this year with some major revamping/twisting and turning. Please sign up to be on the committee if you'd like to share ideas and to help with the  fall fundraiser. The sign-up sheet will be available at the January meeting. Thank you to Becki Tybor who has stepped forward as the chairwoman this year.

Home Consultant Open House
On Wednesday November 9th our club had this event where we brought together fourteen consultants and a few other talented people to sell their wares and to gain new customers. To plan this event it took a few nights of meetings ahead of time, plenty of phone calls to vendors, e-mails back and forth to each committee member, running around to get signs and flyers made, passing out flyers, and of course the evening itself.

I am Mary Wolski the chairwoman for this event and I would like to extend my thanks to the following:
Our late friend Sue Dees, struggling with breast cancer she came out to the first two meetings and shared her talents in planning the event. Sue named our event. As you know Sue passed away before this event took place. Sue was greatly missed.
Virginia Engles, Barb Kuminowski, Joanna Seebeck, you ladies made a fantastic team, thank you.

Also I would like to thank our club's President Joyce Hundhausen & Vice. President Laura Burke for their input was very important. You are two great leaders, thank you.
Ann Warren's craft table is a big plus to our event, for Ann has many cute crafts at great low prices. Laura Burke had five tables filled with home made cookies from her baton group. I thank you two lovely talented ladies for joining our event.

I of course want to thank the vendors for joining our club's event. I wish them well with their new customers.
A big thank you goes out to Jeanette Wells and her son Gregory for their strengths in helping vendors in with their wares, Sharon Fonte for helping out with Ann's craft table, and Judy Huyvaert for hosting our clubs information table.

Thank you to club members who came out to our event. Club members make the best customers. It was a good feeling to see some friends from club enjoying the evening.

It does take commitment of time to pull together an event with many people. When the event comes and the evening goes smoothly it is a good feeling of accomplishment in helping others.

Thank you,
Chairwoman
Mary Wolski

Miss DuPage County and Miss Western Suburbs---Miss America?
Laura Burke
lburke3942@aol.com

Miss Western Suburbs 2005 is just about ready to compete for the title of MISS AMERICA as Miss Illinois 2005! Lauren Allen leaves at 10:00 am on January 10th for 5 days of appearances and rehearsals in LA. Tune in to the Jay Leno show on January 12 when all 52 contestants will be highlighted. They will be bussed to the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas where final preparations will be done. Lauren competes as follows: Tuesday: Evening Gown Wednesday: Talent and on stage Question Thursday: Swimsuit and Interview. Tune in to CMT (Country Music Television) at 7:00 PM on January 21 to watch Lauren in the finals. The top ten will be announced immediately and we're all pulling for Lauren. She by far qualifies and meets all of the requirements to be the next MISS AMERICA but you never know what those judges are looking for. There will be a viewing party at a location to be announced if anyone is interested in gathering for this event.

Thank you to the Glendale Heights Jr. Woman's Club for sponsoring this event and Lauren! Her "Send Off" party was fabulous and included a special speaker, Joyce Hundhausen on behalf of this club and as the sponsoring organization. Thank you to Joyce and Mary Schroeder for attending and representing the club. It's great to grab every opportunity to show how this club supports scholarship programs. Isn't it amazing that the GHJWC is tied to Miss Illinois this year. Without this clubs support, Lauren wouldn't be where she is today.

2006 Program

The Miss DuPage County/Miss Western Suburbs 2006 program is tentatively set for March 4 at the Ramada in Glendale Heights. This is tentative due to their price quote. As much as I want to keep this event in our town, they are way over what our budget allows. With the price of the room rental plus the outside items that we'd have to rent (sound system, pipe/drape, piano etc.) we might have to choose another venue. This will be finalized the second week of January. A sign up will be passed around at our January meeting for anyone interested in tossing in some helping hands on the day of the show. Photo's available at: www.Missil.org.

Thank you!
Laura

Good-Bye
Happy New Year!
Hello, this is Mary Wolski writing to say good-bye to you. This club has been a part of my life for the past four and a half years. I have enjoyed meeting all of you and making friends. I learned from club how to take charge by being a chairwoman, treasurer, and secretary and from Mary Schroeder a good black jack player. These are skills I won't forget. I won't forget you the friends I have made. I have plenty of photos to look back on, for the great memories.

I have decided to take a leave from club to free up my time for home and family. I am sorry for the disappointing news. Who knows what the future holds I just might return in a year or two.

I thank you for understanding that sometimes life takes unexpected turns, and I need to take this turn and say good-bye.

I wish you all well with the up coming year.

God Bless you,
Mary Wolski
